Chopsticks could be the simplest invention of the Chinese People. Once having these efficient instruments in your fingers and mastering some basic skills, you can feel free to help yourself to any great delicacy. If you walk into a restaurant on the side of the street, and sit down at a table, you will always find a pair of disposable chopsticks in front of you. Many people argue that, these disposable chopsticks are healthy because they are used only once. However, what effect does it have on a forest each time you snap open a pair?
Any idea how many disposable chopsticks are produced each year? Or if laid out, how many Tian An Men Squares could they cover? Or, if they were collected and put end to end, how many round trips to the moon and back could they make? These maybe just statistics, however there is a very real price to pay when their production turns forests to deserts and animals are becoming left homeless and without food. Even our national natural treasure – pandas, are feeling the effects.
In this present program, host Lin Tie hits the streets and goes to restaurants collecting points of view regarding disposable chopsticks. Find out how environmentalists use their own chopsticks, combining ecology and the gourmet arts. Once having these ‘eco-sticks’, you too will be at the cutting edge of dinning table fashion and etiquette.
